Hiya!
For today’s post, I have a review for The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna to share with you all. 🫶
Mika Moon is an isolated witch living in Britain, following the rule that witches must hide their magic and stay far away from each other. Nevertheless, all changes when an unexpected message arrives, imploring her to visit Nowhere House to teach three young witches how to control their magic.
I only just finished this book and loved absolutely everything about it. So, this review may read as one long fangirling session. Let’s begin!
Mika Moon? What a wonderful protagonist! I instantly fell in love with her undeniable charm, sense of humor, and bravery. I empathized with her every step of the way and thought her arc was written to perfection. We slowly learn about her past, how it’s shaped her, and how she comes to take that eventual leap of faith.
Additionally, the side characters and the found family trope in this book are splendid! Each character is distinct with personalities and quirks that make them all lovable in their own unique way. Like Mika, I grew to love and care for Ian, Ken, Lucie, Jamie, and the girls. Someone, please let me be a part of this group hug!
Oh and the romance! That took me completely by surprise, as I wasn’t expecting one. And, it was oh so beautiful. *dreamy sigh* I thought Mika and Jamie’s relationship evolved and blossomed flawlessly. I like that it was enough of a slow burn but not too much — everything falls into place just right. And their dynamic is to die for, with Mika being the sunshine and Jamie bringing the grumpy.
Lastly, Mandanna’s writing immerses the reader completely in her story. I truly felt as if I was with Mika in her cozy attic, staying up late to brew potions and harvest moonlight. I also appreciated how we get a peek at different characters’ perspectives throughout the book, as it added to the excitement and makes you love the characters even more.
All in all, reading this book feels like the biggest, warmest hug. The gorgeous setting, with all the cozy vibes, lively characters, and delightful witchiness makes for one of the best reading experiences ever. I highly, highly recommend it if you’re a fan of any of those things.
I will now run off to brew some tea and leave you with my rating and favorite quote! (Mika, I miss you already! 🥺)
“I can’t transform the world, Jamie. The world’s too big and too messy and too stubborn.”
“Who said anything about transforming the world?” He shrugged. “What about just making it a little better? And then a little better? And then a little more, until, one day, maybe long after we’re gone, it has transformed?”
Have you read this book? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts if you wish to share!
Thank you so much for reading this review! I hope you’re having the loveliest day and wish you lots of happy reading! 💗
